via 201 – The harvest season is the perfect time to pick your own perfect pumpkin and take in the view from an old-fashioned perch: sitting on a bale of hay in a wagon.

Fortunately, that form of transportation is still available at several Bergen County farms every October.

Some farms also have corn mazes (day and night!), freshly made doughnuts, and apple cider – both hot and cold.

Contact the farms directly for hours and pricing.

In Bergen County:

Abma’s Farm, 700 Lawlins Road, Wyckoff. Saturday hayrides as well as group hayrides by appointment. (Closed Sundays.)

Demarest Farms, 244 Wierimus Road, Hillsdale. A pumpkin-picking hayride – and be sure to enjoy a freshly made doughnut after the trip!

Depiero’s Farm, 300 W. Grand Ave., Montvale. Hail a hayride out to the pumpkin patch.

Secor Farms, 168 Airmont Ave., Mahwah. Hitch a hayride to the pumpkin patch and corn maze.

Nutcracker2015

New Jersey Ballet’s 45th anniversary season presentation of the holiday classic Nutcracker comes to Mayo Performing Arts Center for 14 performances beginning Friday, December 11 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $29-69 – CLICK HERE to purchase yours now!

New Jersey Ballet’s 45th anniversary season presentation of the holiday classic Nutcracker will feature musical accompaniment by the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. The collaboration marks the first time that MPAC, New Jersey’s leading ballet company and symphony orchestra have worked together to present the seasonal favorite in Morristown.

“Adding the prestige of New Jersey Symphony Orchestra to the artistry of New Jersey Ballet is sure to make the 45th anniversary of Nutcracker a memorable event for all who attend,” says Allison Larena, President and CEO of MPAC. “There will be extra magic in the air when two of the state’s most acclaimed artistic organizations collaborate, along with MPAC, for this must-see holiday experience.”

“We’re looking forward to the 45th season of our holiday classic, and we’re especially delighted that the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra is joining us at the Mayo Performing Arts Center to create this powerful collaboration of three great New Jersey cultural institutions,” adds Carolyn Clark, Director of New Jersey Ballet.

New Jersey Ballet’s Nutcracker is the longest running original professional production in the state. It debuted in Millburn in 1971 with international star of New York City Ballet Edward Villella as the Cavalier. Since then, the company has given approximately 800 performances in theatres throughout New Jersey, with more than 5,000 dancers and children, and more than a million viewers. Many in the audience who saw the production as children now bring their own children and grandchildren to see this cherished holiday tradition.

New Jersey Ballet’s Nutcracker at MPAC will feature the NJSO under the baton of Gary S. Fagin. When the curtain rises, audiences in Morristown can expect the eye-popping special effects, brilliant dancing, glorious costumes, and the magic and pantomime that have inspired critics to call it “A spectacle that never seems to age…magic that should go on and on,” and “One of the best…as good as it gets.”  Continue reading

Morristown’s Downtown is Tops!

2015-09-10_11-16-25This month’s issue of New Jersey Monthly magazine names Morristown’s Downtown as their pick for “Favorite Downtown”.

Joanna Buffum reports on the social heart of our town:

The Morristown Green, established in 1715, is the heart of downtown, and adjacent South Street its main artery. You’ll find Revolutionary War landmarks throughout town and a National Historic Park, Jockey Hollow, where Washington’s troops shivered through the frigid winter of 1780, just to the south.
By day, South Street draws the local lunch crowd; at night, the area booms with out-of-towners who mingle at such watering holes as Sona Thirteen, Iron Bar,Grasshopper, Tashmoo, Hops and the Famished Frog.

The downtown is so walkable, the Morristown-based Seeing Eye has used it as a living classroom for guide dogs and their blind companions for more than 50 years. Jim Kutsch, president and CEO of the Seeing Eye, and his wife Ginger, are both blind and happily call Morristown home. The “no car, two-dog family” walks everywhere. “I really haven’t been able to do so much on foot since I was on a university campus,” says Kutsch.

Morristown has a proud history of caring for the needy. Downtown includes numerous soup kitchens and the historic Market Street Mission shelter, established in 1889.
