Inspired by the story of a Mendham woman who built a children’s home and school in Nepal, two teachers from the Peck School in Morristown are traveling to that country to develop the school’s curriculum, train its teachers and rework its underdeveloped technology program.
Nina Sharma and Suzy Becker left Friday for Nepal, where they plan to stay for three weeks in Kopila and work with Maggie Doyne, a 24-year-old graduate of West Morris Mendham High School who came upon the area in 2005 while traveling around the world before attending college.
Doyne was so moved by the plight of local residents that she led an effort that resulted in the construction of the Kopila Valley Children’s Home, which serves as shelter for 35 underprivileged children, and the Kopila Valley Primary School, which provides more than 230 children with education, health care and a daily meal.
