In interviews, Rosanne Cash is quick to acknowledge her main inspiration as a songwriter: Joni Mitchell.
The two share a number of traits. Both are acclaimed for their literate and introspective lyrics, their emotion-tinged vocals and their blurring lines among musical genres. So it makes sense that Cash would look to Mitchell as a role model.
It might puzzle some people that Cash doesn’t cite her famous father, the late Johnny Cash.
But from her earliest days as a performer, Rosanne Cash has sought to carve out her own distinctive musical identity. Listeners will have the chance to hear selections from her long career when she performs her blend of country, rock, folk and blues at the Community Theatre Friday evening.
