Alex Toia wants to dispel a few myths.

The private investigator who wears a rumpled trench coat and who snoops to prove a husband’s philandering ways is an outdated and unfair caricature.

“One of the things is we have this terrible reputation of being sleazy matrimonial investigators. … While that’s part of the profession, it’s not something that we do,” said Toia, 62, who was named Investigator of the Year by the New Jersey Licensed Private Investigator’s Association.

“I use my law enforcement background in conducting criminal defense investigations on both the federal and state level for both adults and juveniles,” said Toia, who works at the Morristown office of Alexander Toia & Company, LLC.

Toia was honored June 7 in Ewing by his peers and clients during the association’s annual golf outing. He said he began his career working pretrial intervention at the Morris County Courthouse in the 1970s.

From there he got an offer to work for Chubb Insurance as a claims investigator. He became a licensed independent investigator in 1982 when he branched out on his own.

“I’ve been on my own for 29 years, and an investigator for 39 years,” Toia said.

Glenn Dinetz, executive vice president for the private investigator’s association and owner of Greystone Intelligence out of Morris County and East Brunswick, described Toia as “the epitome of today’s new investigator.”
